Fiji Prime Minister, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka - on iTaukei incomes (Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka's Facebook post - 17 July 2025)
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that indigenous Fijians (iTaukei) receive approximately $100 million annually from iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) leases and royalties.
Here are the key details regarding land, income, and policies under his leadership:
Income Distribution: Out of the total annual income generated from leases, royalties, and other sources (such as remittances), 80 percent ($1.22 billion) is used on daily living expenses, 15 percent ($228 million) on building/renovating homes, and only 5 percent ($72 million) on savings and investments.
Support for Landowners: Rabuka has emphasized that these income streams highlight the increased purchasing power of the iTaukei and indicate that their income often exceeds the national poverty threshold.
Security of Tenure: Amid rumors of changes to land ownership, PM Rabuka has consistently assured landowners and tenants that his government will honour all existing titles, leases, and contracts, including those for agricultural and state land.
Long-term Leases Review: His administration has taken steps to address historic land issues, including reviewing and, in some cases, surrendering 999-year leases to revert them to 99-year agreements to better suit the interests of the customary landowners.
Focus on Development: The government is encouraging landowners to go beyond receiving leases and move towards proactive management of their land for economic development
